About hipSwan
At hipSwan, we’re focused on making better everyday socks.
Not novelty designs. Not trend-led colors. Not a constantly expanding catalog. And not a new sales pitch every day telling you it’s your “last chance” to save 50%.
We don’t even participate in Black Friday. Instead, we run our own version — Green Friday — where we double our tree-planting pledge.
We design for the conscious consumer: someone who cares about the provenance, quality and sustainability of the products they wear every day, and who wants to support brands that share those values.
Our sock journey began in 2019 with a simple idea: to create a sock brand that combined the latest in performance-focused “sock tech” with a more thoughtful approach to sustainability in an industry too often associated with fast fashion, waste and short product lifespans.
Before launching, we spent two years in research and development. We screened dozens of potential factory partners across several countries, developed more than a dozen prototypes, recruited a consumer advisory panel, and completed long-term wear and washing tests.
In 2021, we launched hipSwan with four core styles in four colors.
That focus was deliberate. We have never wanted to flood the market with endless designs or colors that mainly have marketing appeal rather than underlying demand. In socks, as in most wardrobe essentials, the colors people actually wear most are usually the simplest ones: black, white, and grey. We've also added an undyed/natural colorway to most of our styles.
Our work still happens close to the product. We spend significant time speaking with and visiting our factory partners, discussing how to improve comfort, fit, durability and sustainability. Some of those partners have told us they rarely have these kinds of conversations with other brands, where the focus is often simply on driving costs down.
We take a different view.
We do not have outside investors pushing us toward aggressive growth targets. And our personal disposition is not to squeeze as much revenue as possible from our customers. We run hipSwan in our own likeness: stable, focused, patient, and built around consistency, quality and long-term trust.
Sustainability is not a separate initiative for us. It is part of how we think about every decision: the yarns we use, the factories we work with, the product specifications, the packaging, the transportation, and even the ink on our wrappers.
When you open and wear a pair of hipSwan socks, we hope you feel that care. They were designed by people who considered every aspect of the product — not just how it looks, but how it feels, performs, lasts and fits into a more thoughtful everyday wardrobe.
(one final note - why socks?)
In many ways, socks are the foundation of everyday comfort. They are one of the first things you put on, one of the items you wear most often, and one of the few pieces of clothing that can quietly improve — or undermine — how you feel throughout the day.
Investing in better socks is a small thing, but it can have an outsized effect on how comfortable, settled and at ease you feel as you move through the day. Maybe that sounds over the top, but what else would you expect from a sock-obsessed brand?
